As we come towards the end of the year many of us will have received wedding invitations. Our social media will soon be flooded with photos of the newly wedded couples posting photos of their most memorable day, beautifully adorned, full of smiles with picture perfect photos. Rarely do you see a wedding picture where the bride and groom looked moody or angry with one another, and we know the reason, they are in love, and they have just vowed to stay faithful to each other till death do them apart.
The Bible uses bride and groom as a metaphor for the church’s relationship with Christ. The Bible clearly tells us about Christ’s great love for us, He gave his life to save us. But Our Lord’s redemptive work is not only for our salvation, but He has also made it possible for to us to be with Him not only now but also for the future. Our Lord spent many a time alone with his disciples. In Mark 6, when our Lord Jesus heard about the death of John the Baptist, He called His disciples saying, “Come away with me”. It was a difficult time for Him and His disciples, and He wanted to spend time alone with them, so they left their ministry amongst the masses to be by themselves.
The call to—Come Away with Me—was not just for the disciples in the first century, our Lord Jesus also invites us to be with Him today. Can you imagine an engaged couple not willing to meet with each other or talk to one another? We would be doubtful of their love for each other or that their marriage can work out well. When you are in love with someone you would do anything to be with that person, you will even squeeze out time from your busy schedule to meet. The question we need to ask is, are we in love with Jesus, do we know Him?
John 17: 3
Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
John Macarthur in his Bible commentary on the meaning of Eternal life says, “Eternal life refers not only eternal quantity but divine quality of life. The eternal life is in essence nothing less than participation in the eternal life of the Living Word, Christ Jesus. It is the life of God in every believer.”
Brothers and sisters, once we put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we all have the blessed privilege of being able to come to His presence anywhere, at any time. We can know Him intimately. A W Tozer in his book, “The Pursuit of God” had this to say:
“God is a person and, as such, can be cultivated as any person can. It is inherent in personality to be able to know other personalities, but full knowledge of one personality by another cannot be achieved in one encounter. It is only after long and loving mental intercourse that the full possibilities of both can be explored.”—A. W Tozer
We are on a journey; we are being prepared to spend eternity with God in His kingdom. Let us pray that God will give us the desire to spend time with Him. King David knew God and communed with Him. In Psalm 16:11 David wrote:
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
The more we seek God the more we will be thirsty for Him. All of us are looking for joy and pleasure. Jesus offers these to us in His presence. Let us learn to fellowship with Him.
