ALPHA COURSE (March – June 2024)

The Alpha course introduces the basics of the Christian faith through a series of videos. Originating in England, this course is now conducted worldwide by Christians of all denominations. Participants, whether young Christians or those exploring faith, have the opportunity to delve into life's meaning through candid sharing sessions following the videos.

At BBPC, the Alpha course is held twice a year (in March and August) over 10 weeks. Each session typically begins with a time of food and fellowship, followed by a screening of the 'Alpha Film Series'. These videos feature teachings about Christianity from various speakers and include interviews with individuals whose lives have been impacted by the faith. After watching each video, participants gather in small groups to share their thoughts and feelings about the video in a casual setting. The beauty of the Alpha course lies in its openness to all views and perspectives without bias.

One unique characteristic of the Alpha ministry at BBPC is that many who have attended the course in the past return to serve as facilitators and helpers. It is heartening to note that over more than a decade of running this course at BBPC, many individuals have chosen to commit their lives to Christ and have undergone baptism.

Reflections:  Alpha Course (March – June 2024)

The latest intake included a mix of pre-believers and mature Christians seeking to reconnect with their faith, eager to deepen their intimacy with God. Many participants began with questions and doubts, but by the end of the course, I am heartened to learn that they had discovered their own answers. While running the course for over 10 weeks is a significant commitment, I recognise the importance of completing the Alpha Course without skipping any session. As a servant of God, I am continually reminded of the need to go the extra mile for the sake of God's kingdom.

Having facilitated the Alpha course for a decade, I am deeply humbled by how the Holy Spirit can transform lives, from doubting pre-believers to half-hearted believers sitting on the fence. My heart races with joy each time someone accepts Christ as their Lord and Saviour, as it marks a victory for God's kingdom. Each new intake is a unique experience for me, as everyone's life experiences and sharing differ. As much as the Alpha course impacts participants in various ways, I have also learned a great deal from them through their sharing. I am grateful for the wonderful people I have worked with in the Alpha ministry, both past and present, and for the friendships that have formed over the years. If I were to go back 10 years, I would still choose to do the same thing again.

At one point in my life, I had to wrestle with my trust in God after illness plagued my family in India. Upon coming to Singapore, I felt led to attend BBPC. As if by divine intervention, a member from BBPC, Aunt Cherry, encouraged me to join the Alpha course. I vividly recall a moment in one of the videos where the narrator spoke about trusting the driver and not jumping out of the train, even when one cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. This narration resonated deeply with me, reminding me to fully trust in God regardless of my life circumstances.

Having recently graduated from the Alpha course, I think that the  course is well-structured, addressing fundamental questions about life and faith. The small group discussions were the main highlight for me. The diverse perspectives through the sharing gave me greater insight into the Christian faith. The open  environment  allowed me to explore life's difficult questions without fear of judgment. Each sharing session was thought-provoking and enlightening for me at the same time,

When my spouse (from a different faith) and I attended the Alpha course for the first time, the facilitators made us feel comfortable and at ease. They allowed my husband to share about his own faith without discrimination. Although we initially dropped out of the Alpha course, Mathew and Linda encouraged us to rejoin. After watching the videos, I feel more rooted in my faith and reassured by God's blessings. I am also more encouraged to study the Bible and recognise the importance of fellowshipping with God's family of believers. Without the Alpha course, I would have missed out on essential doctrines and teachings. I believe the Alpha course serves as an awakening for those who may be blinded by worldly pursuits.

I find the messages shared in the videos to be concise, relatable, and easy to digest. The sharing from people of diverse backgrounds was not only refreshing but also thought-provoking. Having participated in many discussions, I have learned to address objections in a respectful manner without imposing my opinions on others. My greatest satisfaction comes from witnessing participants being moved by the Holy Spirit to accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
